Cyprus FM: UK Bases are Defensive - Cannot Speak for the British

The Cypriot Foreign Minister, Konstantinos Kombos, in an interview with CNN, emphasized the strong support Cyprus has received from European countries and the need to strengthen the EU's diplomatic presence in the region. Answering a question about the use of British bases in Cyprus, he stated that he cannot speak on behalf of Britain, but that London has made it clear that the bases are used exclusively for defensive operations. Mr. Kombos stressed that Cyprus is already experiencing the consequences of the conflict in the Middle East, which affects maritime security, energy costs, economies, and supply chains. He expressed the view that the EU needs to be more diplomatically involved to de-escalate tensions and find a political solution. The Foreign Minister mentioned that Cyprus had prioritized the wider Middle East region during its presidency of the EU Council, which proves to be particularly important in light of current developments. He emphasized that Europe is directly affected by what is happening in the region, as it is not simply a regional conflict. Furthermore, Mr. Kombos mentioned Cyprus's close relations with the Gulf countries and the need for the EU to express its solidarity with them. He recently visited the United Arab Emirates and plans to return to the region in the coming days for further contacts.
