Cypriot Livestock Farmers Await EU Response on Culling of Healthy Animals

Livestock farmers across Cyprus gathered in Choirokoitia to express their unity and reiterate their request to the European Union to halt the mass culling of healthy animals due to foot-and-mouth disease. Farmers are awaiting a response from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen by Thursday, following mediation by the President of the Republic of Cyprus. They express hope that the response will be positive and lead to an immediate end to the culling. Livestock farmer Anastasis Zanettou emphasized the unity of the farmers and their expectation of a positive outcome. They reiterate the request to stop the culling until a new decree is issued and warn that they will take further decisions after Thursday if the culling continues. Livestock farmer Andria Pithara also highlighted the unity of the farmers and the expectation of a positive response. She did not provide further comments until a response is received from the President of the Republic. In addition to halting the culling, farmers are also requesting the vaccination of all animals and the immediate payment of compensation to those affected by foot-and-mouth disease. The situation remains uncertain until the announcement of the response from the European Commission.
