Livestock Farmers: "This is Barbaric Slaughter, Not a Health Protocol"

Livestock farmers are expressing strong reactions to the culling of animals as part of the measures to combat foot-and-mouth disease in Cyprus. They believe that these actions are not a health protocol but "barbaric slaughter." Farmer Anastasis Zanettou describes the difficult and painful situation experienced by producers, emphasizing that farms and herds are more than just a professional activity for them – they are part of their lives. Mr. Zanettou appeals to society to understand the position of livestock farmers, who work daily, even on holidays, to care for their animals. He points out that they are being asked to cull thousands of animals, even those that are not sick, due to economic and commercial reasons. The images he describes are harsh, with animals reacting and trying to escape during the culling. Mother animals search for their young in areas where animals have already been killed, while newborns are often the first to die. The farmer believes that this practice cannot simply be considered a health protocol. Mr. Zanettou calls on citizens to support livestock farmers and join their voices, asking for "humanity" and to stop the mass culling of animals. He emphasizes that farmers are not asking for charity but for justice and ethical behavior.
