Vet Services: Methods of Culling Used are Appropriate

The Veterinary Services of Cyprus continue epidemiological investigations into foot-and-mouth disease, which remain concentrated in the province of Larnaca. 34 infected units have been identified, and approximately 269 cows and 13,890 sheep and goats have been culled. The services assure that the culling methods (stun gun and euthanasia drug) are appropriate and have secured an adequate supply of euthanasia drug. Despite protests from some organizations, the Veterinary Services emphasize that veterinarians are working hard to address the crisis and condemn the negative portrayal of their work. They also note that complaints have been filed regarding attempts by livestock farmers to obstruct the culling procedures.
