Kremlin: EU's Plan to Halt Russian LNG is Self-Destructive

The Kremlin has strongly criticized the European Union's plan to gradually phase out imports of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG), describing it as self-destructive. Moscow states it will turn to new markets for LNG and other energy exports, believing the EU is harming its own interests. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia has the ability to find alternative buyers, especially in developing countries with increased energy needs. This reaction came in response to statements by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who reaffirmed the EU's commitment to ending Russian LNG imports, despite rising energy prices due to the war in the Middle East. Before the war in Ukraine, Russia was the main supplier of natural gas to Europe, covering over 40% of its needs. However, Russia's share of total EU imports has decreased significantly, reaching 13% in 2025. The EU plans to stop LNG imports by the end of 2026 and pipeline imports by September 30, 2027. Russian President Vladimir Putin has left open the possibility of prematurely halting exports. In parallel, the Kremlin announced it is in contact with Cuba to support it, as it faces difficulties due to the oil embargo from the United States. There are reports of a secret delivery of Russian diesel to Havana, with a tanker preparing to deliver approximately 190,000 barrels of fuel within days.
