Foot-and-Mouth Crisis: The Need for a Food Safety Authority

The emergency mobilization to tackle the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak highlights the need to establish an independent Food Safety Authority in Cyprus. The absence of such an authority leads to fragmented efforts and delays in effective crisis management. The Authority would have the responsibility to coordinate services, implement protocols, and react promptly, acting as the "guardian" of public health. The delay in promoting the relevant bill to Parliament is unacceptable and must be resolved immediately. Protecting the agri-food chain requires institutions, not just emergency measures.
