Fine Increased for Woman Convicted of Fatal Traffic Accident in Cyprus

The Supreme Court of Cyprus has increased the sentence imposed on a 66-year-old woman convicted of causing a fatal traffic accident in Nicosia in April 2021. The woman had pleaded guilty to reckless driving and failing to stay in the correct lane, resulting in the death of a motorcycle passenger and serious injury to the driver. The original court had imposed a fine of €1,000, penalty points on her driving license, and a two-month driving ban. The Prosecution appealed, arguing that the sentence was insufficient. The Supreme Court, while not considering the woman's actions as “conscious disregard,” decided to increase the fine to €3,000, maintaining the other penalties. This decision highlights the need for deterrent penalties in cases of dangerous driving with fatal consequences.
