Student Grants Being Cut

Instead of increasing the overall fund for student grants, the government has chosen to support more students with the same amount, reducing the living allowance for many to the minimum of €500. In practice, this means that a student who could have received the maximum living allowance of €1,800 based on their socio-economic data may ultimately be limited to the lower amount to enable support for a larger number of beneficiaries. The amounts of the grants remain unchanged (€1,800 or €500 for living expenses, €1,092 for food, €500 for first-year students, and €300 for air tickets). The lack of adjustment to the amounts, in an environment of rising cost of living, means that state support is not increasing proportionally to the needs of students. The €500 grant acts as a minimum safety net, ensuring that no eligible student is left without support, but it does not substantially cover living expenses.
