Commission: Approval of €44.5m State Aid for Limassol Stadium

The European Commission has approved €44.5 million in state aid to fund the construction of the new football stadium in Limassol. The aid covers both the construction of the stadium, which was completed in 2022, and its subsequent use by the professional football clubs Apollon, AEL, and Aris on preferential terms. The funding was granted to the Cyprus Sports Organisation (CSO), which is the owner and manager of the stadium. The European Commission states that the new stadium replaced the old one, which no longer met modern safety standards and technical specifications. In addition, the Commission approved a 20-year lease agreement between the CSO and the three teams, under which the clubs gain the right to use the stadium for their home matches by paying a lower annual rent than the market level. The preferential pricing is accompanied by obligations for the teams regarding the operation, maintenance, and safety of the facilities. The European Commission ruled that the measures are appropriate, necessary, and proportionate to provide and effectively use modern sports infrastructure, as there was no private funding and the impact on competition is limited.
