EU to Deliver 529,000 Foot-and-Mouth Disease Vaccines to Cyprus – Regionalization to Ensure Exports

Cyprus and the European Commission are collaborating to combat the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease, with the Commission assuring the timely delivery of 529,000 vaccine doses by Saturday. Initial vaccine shipments have already arrived, with 10,000 yesterday and 50,000 today, with over half a million doses expected on Saturday morning. Vaccinations are progressing according to plan, with a focus on areas surrounding the disease outbreaks. Simultaneously, the Commission is ensuring that exports from unaffected regions of Cyprus will not be impacted, implementing regionalization measures. This means that only the affected area will be subject to restrictions, while the rest will continue to export normally. The European Commissioner assured that products, such as halloumi, are safe for consumption. The European Commissioner emphasized the importance of the first two weeks in containing the spread of the disease, as foot-and-mouth disease is highly contagious. The EU will support farmers with vaccines and financial compensation. Additionally, the possibility of illegal food movements from the occupied territories being linked to the epidemic is being investigated. The successful management of the crisis depends on restrictions on movement and the rapid implementation of vaccinations. The European Commission and Cyprus are working closely together to limit the spread of the disease and protect the economy and the health of citizens.
