Parliamentary Investigation into Homeless Family with Pending Protection Application

The Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights is conducting an investigation into the case of a Lebanese family with minor children who were left homeless while having applied for international protection. The investigation was initiated ex officio, following a citizen's complaint, and concerns potential shortcomings in providing housing and protection to the family. The Committee President, Irene Charalambidou, expressed her strong concern about the family's living conditions, emphasizing that human dignity should not be violated. She contacted the police when she learned that family members were on the street. The Undersecretary for Migration, Nikolaos Ioannidis, said that there were difficulties in managing the case due to the multiple requests submitted by the family, starting in 2022. The family had applied for international protection and relocation to another EU member state, but ultimately returned with an asylum application. Mr. Ioannidis stressed that the successive changes in the family's status created problems for the services, while assuring that it is an isolated case. He also emphasized that the government is working to improve hosting infrastructure and avoid similar incidents in the future.
