Closing Loopholes in Tax Evasion Through Crypto-Assets

Parliament has approved a bill to align Cyprus with a European directive on administrative cooperation in the field of taxation, aiming to close loopholes in tax evasion through crypto-assets and other new categories of income. The bill requires crypto-asset service providers to submit information on their users and transactions to the Tax Department, as well as the submission of a Tax Identification Number (TIN) for various income and transactions. The automatic exchange of tax information is also extended to individuals and in cases of transactions exceeding €1.5 million. This regulation strengthens the ability of tax authorities to leverage data for risk assessment and tax audits. The exchange of information takes place through a secure electronic system developed by the European Commission.
