Mobilization with Disinfections in Limassol for Foot-and-Mouth Disease

The municipalities of Limassol, Kouriou, Polemidia, and Amathous are mobilizing to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth disease, implementing instructions from the Veterinary Services for disinfection at the entrances and exits of livestock areas. The Municipality of Kouriou has banned access to the Akrotiri meadow, where rare native cows are raised, in order to protect this endangered population. The Mayor of Kouriou also announced the construction of disinfection tanks for vehicles entering and leaving livestock areas, extending the measures to zones beyond its direct jurisdiction. The President of the Republic has expressed support for affected livestock farmers, while European experts are expected in Cyprus to assess the situation. It has been assured that there is no problem with halloumi cheese. Livestock farmers are expressing strong concern about potential losses, and the Mayor of Kouriou intends to request preventative vaccinations from the Ministry of Agriculture. The municipalities of Polemidia and Amathous are following similar measures, constructing disinfection tanks and informing livestock farmers about the ban on moving animals for grazing. The situation is being closely monitored, and local authorities are cooperating to address the crisis. This mobilization comes at a critical time, as the disease threatens livestock farming in the region. Authorities are trying to limit the spread of the virus and protect farmers and their animals.
