Cyprus Prioritizes Agriculture and Cohesion Policy Amid Foot-and-Mouth Crisis

The Minister of Finance, Makis Keravnos, presented the priorities of the Cypriot presidency for the Cohesion Policy to the Regional Development Committee (REGI) of the European Parliament. He emphasized the importance of geography not being a barrier to opportunities and stressed that agriculture and livestock farming must remain key elements of the Cohesion Policy, given their connection to the food chain, health, the environment, and the economy. Mr. Keravnos referred to the recent outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Cyprus, which requires the culling of thousands of animals, and the serious impact it will have on farmers, livestock breeders, and processing industries, such as halloumi cheese production. He highlighted the need for a human-centered approach and balanced development, taking into account regions, remote areas, and island policies. Furthermore, the Minister emphasized strengthening the EU's internal resilience and promoting strategic autonomy, recognizing the crucial role of the Cohesion Policy in Europe's development for more than four decades. The Cohesion Policy has contributed to modernizing infrastructure, supporting SMEs, strengthening research, and promoting digital transformation. Regarding Cyprus, Mr. Keravnos mentioned that interventions from the Cohesion Policy contributed to a 6% increase in Cyprus's GDP and the creation of more than 25,000 new jobs during the 2014-2020 programming period, with similar forecasts for the current program. The Cohesion Policy is considered a stabilizing force and an engine of long-term convergence.
