Cyprus Prioritizes Cohesion Policy, Addresses Foot-and-Mouth Crisis

The Minister of Finance, Makis Keravnos, presented the Cypriot presidency's priorities for the Cohesion Policy to the European Parliament's REGI Committee, emphasizing the importance of geographical equality of opportunity. He also expressed concern over the recent outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Cyprus, highlighting its serious impact on livestock farming, agriculture, food processing (milk, yogurt, halloumi), and exports. Mr. Keravnos stressed the need for a human-centered approach and balanced development, including support for regions and island areas. The Minister stated that the Cohesion Policy has been a cornerstone of the EU for over four decades, contributing to infrastructure modernization, SME support, research enhancement, digital transformation, improved energy efficiency, and skills development. Furthermore, Mr. Keravnos highlighted the positive impact of the Cohesion Policy on Cyprus during the 2014-2020 programming period, with a 6% increase in GDP and the creation of over 25,000 new jobs. Optimism was expressed for similar results in the current programming period. The Cypriot government seeks to strengthen the EU's internal resilience and promote strategic autonomy, considering the Cohesion Policy a vital tool for achieving these goals. The foot-and-mouth disease crisis underscores the need for continued support for farmers and livestock breeders, as well as the protection of agricultural production and the food industry.
