Center-Right Majority? How?

President Christodoulides is seeking a center-right majority in Parliament, despite polls indicating a fragmented political landscape with numerous smaller parties and stagnation of the two major parties. Achieving this majority does not appear to be a natural outcome, but requires agreements and concessions between parties. A rift has emerged in the relationship between the government and DIKO, due to disagreements on issues such as GSI, with Nikola Papadopoulos expressing reservations about the cooperation. The Presidency is trying to mitigate the impression, emphasizing its commitment to interconnection. A significant factor is the high abstention rate in elections, especially among younger ages, which strengthens unpredictable voting and new parties. This makes it difficult to create a stable majority. In practice, the government appears to be resorting to ad hoc majorities for each bill, as demonstrated by the passage of the 2026 budget with the support of different parties. However, a long-term solution requires a form of understanding with DISY, the largest center-right pole, despite the lack of official cooperation. Christodoulides is called upon to reduce tensions within the coalition and build a stable parliamentary base to ensure governability until 2028.
