Prison System Abuse: Long-Term Sick Leave Raises Concerns

An audit by the Audit Office has revealed serious problems in the Central Prisons regarding long-term sick leave of prison officers. A sample check of 17 officers showed that 8 were receiving sick certificates from the same two doctors, with absences reaching up to 229 days per year. Furthermore, it was found that many certificates were not registered in the GESY system, while a general practitioner was issuing diagnoses for orthopedic issues and an orthopedic doctor for migraines. The Audit Office will inform the Pan Cypriot Medical Association, the OAY, and the Legal Service about possible violations and criminal offenses.
