Cyprus: Government Stands with Those Affected by Foot-and-Mouth Disease Crisis

The Cypriot government stands with those affected by the foot-and-mouth disease crisis, assured Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis. The assurance was given after the conclusion of the National Council, where the vast majority of political forces agreed that strict adherence to protocols is the surest and fastest way to overcome the crisis. The European Union is providing clear support to Cyprus, both financially and technically, to address the disease. Mr. Letymbiotis stressed that the state will continue to support those affected by the crisis, while recognizing the need for strict implementation of protocols to limit the spread of the disease and reactivate the livestock sector. The implementation of the protocols is considered crucial for restoring safety and resuming activities. Regarding reports of animal transfers to other areas, the Spokesman avoided confirming or denying them, stating that the competent authorities are investigating the allegations. However, he stressed his concern about possible violations and the need for strict adherence to protocols by all. Mr. Letymbiotis reiterated that the European Union has made it clear that adherence to the protocols is the quickest way to deal with the crisis, emphasizing the importance of cooperation and responsibility from all stakeholders to protect livestock and public health.
