Landslide Hits Campsite in New Zealand, Multiple People Missing

A major landslide struck a campsite in the northern part of New Zealand, leaving several people missing, including children. The mudslide covered and damaged parts of the campsite at the foot of Mount Manganui, a sacred site for the Maori and a popular tourist destination. Authorities report that the number of missing persons is likely in the single digits, while rescuers initially heard voices of trapped individuals but were forced to withdraw due to the risk of another landslide. Despite the difficulties, it is estimated that there is still a chance of finding survivors. The landslide primarily affected RVs and sanitation areas. The region had experienced extreme rainfall, with 274 mm of rain falling in 24 hours, the highest record since 1910. Simultaneously, reports indicate missing persons and injuries from a landslide on a residence and the suspension of a search for a man swept away by floods. A state of emergency remains in effect in five areas of the North Island.
