Demolition of Historic Buildings in Karava Condemned by Municipality

The Municipality of Karava condemns the ongoing demolition of historical buildings in the occupied town, expressing "anger and outrage." The latest complaint concerns the demolition of the mansion of former mayor Grigoris Chatzilambrou, adding to a chain of destructions that also includes the house of the Poyiatzis (Kontylis) family and Lefteris Chatzistefanou. The Municipality characterizes these actions as a conscious effort to alter the historical presence of the rightful residents. It notes that the houses are not at the mercy of the occupiers and that their demolition violates international law, cultural protection and human dignity. It emphasizes that even Turkish Cypriot residents condemn these actions, showing that the destruction of cultural heritage affects the entire area. The Municipality calls on the United Nations, the European Union and other international organizations to intervene to stop the "cultural looting" and the destruction of historical heritage, stating that it will not remain silent until its return to its homes in conditions of freedom and justice.
