“We Submitted Numerous Proposals” Erhurman Says About Checkpoints, Accusing Christodoulides of Evasion

T/C leader Tufan Erhurman states that he has submitted “numerous additional proposals” regarding the new checkpoints. Upon assuming office, he found a map with four new crossing points (Louroujina, Mia Milia, Athienou, and Aglantzia), which had already been discussed in New York. Mr. Erhurman argued that Mia Milia and Louroujina would benefit both communities, while a second checkpoint in Nicosia would relieve traffic at Agios Dometios. Regarding the Athienou – Aglantzia road, he emphasized it would primarily facilitate Greek Cypriots, but this does not bother the T/C side. He pointed out that the T/C side submitted three proposals for the Athienou – Aglantzia road – construction of a new road in the occupied territories, a road from the narrowest point of the buffer zone with European funding, and compensation for Greek Cypriot properties – but these were not accepted. Mr. Erhurman accused President Christodoulides of insisting that the road must pass exclusively through the buffer zone, noting that the excuses presented were constantly replaced by the President’s initial position. He characterized the recent proposals from the G/C side to discuss new checkpoints as an “attempt to undermine” those already on the table, using the Turkish saying “spoiling what’s already cooked”. He also expressed his displeasure with statements through the media, stating that he preferred to avoid public confrontation. He stated that the T/C side would continue to work with sincerity and determination, while also informing the international community.
