Cypriot Paralympic Committee to File Complaint Against MEP for Offensive Remark

The Cypriot Paralympic Committee will file a complaint to the European Parliament against MEP Fydias Panayiotou, following his remark during a podcast referring to people with intellectual disabilities as “pellous”. The Committee's president, Andreas Georgiou, stated that the behavior insults the Paralympic movement and that ignorance is not an excuse. The Federation of Special Olympics and the Commissioner for Administration also condemned the comment, emphasizing the outdated perception and lack of respect towards people with disabilities. The Commissioner for Administration recalled the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, highlighting that barriers to their participation in society are not only environmental but also stereotypes and prejudices.
