Head of Fire Department Testifies in Deadly Crans-Montana Fire Investigation

The head of the Crans-Montana fire department testified yesterday to police as a witness in the investigation into the deadly fire at the “Le Constellation” bar on New Year's Eve, which claimed the lives of 41 people and injured 115. David Voka testified at the Sion police station, while the investigation examines the causes of the fire, compliance with safety regulations, and potential criminal liabilities. According to the investigation's findings, the fire started when sparks touched the soundproofing foam on the roof of the bar's basement. The investigation will reveal whether safety regulations were followed and will assign responsibility to the owners and those responsible for safety. Fire safety checks at the bar had not been carried out since 2019, while they should have been carried out annually. Voka was present at safety checks in 2018, where deficiencies were recorded and handed over to the owner. The investigation targets the French couple who own the bar, the community's safety officer, and his predecessor. Voka's testimony was eagerly awaited by civil action lawyers, especially after revelations about a 2023 inspection that found deficiencies in fire safety measures in the community.
