Rare Shark Spotted in Antarctic Waters for the First Time

A rare sleeper shark has been recorded for the first time in the icy waters of Antarctica, surprising the scientific community. The video, captured in January 2025, shows the shark moving slowly at a depth of 490 meters, where the water temperature is just 1.27 degrees Celsius. Scientists express their surprise, as sharks were previously thought not to live in such cold waters. This recording suggests that climate change and rising ocean temperatures may be driving sharks into colder waters. However, it is possible that sleeper sharks have lived in Antarctica for a long time without being detected, due to the region's isolation.
