Cyprus Faces Ongoing Photovoltaic Production Cuts Due to Lack of Storage Infrastructure

Fanos Karandonis, President of the Association of Renewable Energy Companies, addressed the issue of production cuts in photovoltaic energy due to the lack of storage infrastructure. The cuts amount to 6% of Cyprus' annual electricity demand, with the majority coming from commercial photovoltaic parks. Despite the cuts, investment in photovoltaic systems remains profitable, with a payback period of 3-3.5 years. The main problem is the mismatch between energy production and consumption, as production peaks when most citizens are away from home. The solution lies in developing energy storage infrastructure to utilize the surplus production.
