Quarantines and Disinfection Points Due to Foot-and-Mouth Disease – Agriculture Ministry Recommendations

The Department of Agriculture has sent recommendations to local authorities to implement preventive biosecurity measures in all livestock areas, as well as a letter to the Provincial Administrations of Larnaca, Limassol, and Paphos to limit the spread of foot-and-mouth disease. The measures include the placement of disinfection points (wheel washes) at the entrances and exits of livestock areas. These measures are based on the practice followed in the Municipality of Aradippou and aim to strengthen the existing biosecurity measures that farmers are obliged to take. The cost of constructing the wheel washes will be covered by the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment. In case of multiple entrances to a livestock area, these should be closed and entrance should only be allowed through the disinfection points. The Department of Agriculture expressed satisfaction with the response of the Municipality of Aradippou and the construction of wheel washes. The implementation of the measures requires cooperation with local authorities, Veterinary Services and farmers. The Department of Agriculture has informed farmers about foot-and-mouth disease and has distributed material for recognizing the symptoms. The use of vaccines is not considered necessary at this time.
