SEPPAHK Raises Concerns Over Cyta Energy Bill

SEPPAHK expresses serious reservations about the bill concerning Cyta's involvement in the energy sector. The president of SEPPAHK, Marios Pappoutis, characterized the bill as a "Cypriot originality" as it involves the participation of two semi-state organizations, Cyta and EAC, in the same sector. Management, leadership, and employees of EAC have already requested the withdrawal of the bill, believing it does not serve the public interest. Mr. Pappoutis stressed the need to reduce the overall cost of the electricity system, rather than benefiting only small groups of consumers. He also noted that the electricity market already has 11 suppliers and 220 independent renewable energy producers since October 2025. SEPPAHK argues that the involvement of two semi-state organizations in the same sector creates coordination and efficiency problems, likening it to a "ship with two captains." The organization believes that EAC has the expertise and infrastructure to address the challenges of the energy sector. The bill is causing intense debate in Cyprus as it concerns a strategic choice that will impact the energy market and consumers. SEPPAHK calls on the government to reconsider the bill and take into account the concerns of workers and society.
