Guterres Warns Israel of Referral to The Hague over Actions Against UNRWA

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned Israel that it may refer the country to the International Court of Justice in The Hague if it does not repeal laws targeting the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and return seized assets and facilities. The warning is contained in a letter to Benjamin Netanyahu, emphasizing that Israel's actions are contrary to international law. Israel has already passed laws prohibiting the operation of UNRWA in the country and communication between state officials and the agency, while also seizing facilities and assets. Mr. Guterres states that the UN cannot remain indifferent to these actions and that they must be revoked immediately. The Israeli ambassador rejected Guterres' letter, accusing the UN of indifference regarding the involvement of UNRWA personnel in terrorism. The International Criminal Court has already issued a preliminary opinion emphasizing Israel's obligation to guarantee the basic needs of the civilian population in the Gaza Strip. The situation remains tense, and the threat of referral to the Hague Court constitutes a serious escalation. The international community is closely monitoring developments and calling on all parties to respect international law and seek a peaceful solution.
