Warning from Labor Inspection Department Regarding Work Accidents - 18% in Construction

The Labor Inspection Department is focusing on preventing accidents caused by falls from height, especially in construction sites, following a series of serious work accidents, two of which were fatal, in the past week. According to Department data, 18% of work accidents in 2023 occurred in the construction sector, which is also the leading sector in the number of fatal accidents, according to the trade unions PEO and SEK. The Labor Inspection Department conducts approximately 5,000 workplace inspections annually, covering a total of 130,000 workplaces and 10,000 construction sites. The Director of the Department, Aristodimos Oikonomidis, states that the absolute responsibility for safety in workplaces lies with the employer and that the Department focuses on where the problem is greatest. Although the number of inspections is considered adequate, strengthening the staff would be helpful. Inspections focus on sectors with the most accidents, with the construction sector taking first place with 3,000 inspections annually. The Labor Inspection Department plans to intensify inspections in construction sites to prevent accidents from falls from height, as this is one of the main factors causing work accidents.
