Authenticity of Photos Depicting Kaisariani Executions Confirmed - Ministry of Culture to Acquire Them

The authenticity of the photographs depicting the execution of 200 Greeks in Kaisariani during the German occupation has been confirmed. The collection of 262 photographs belonged to a collector, and a preliminary agreement has been signed with the Ministry of Culture for their acquisition. A delegation from the Ministry of Culture, led by Deputy Minister Lina Mendoni, examined the collection in the Evergem Town Hall and confirmed its authenticity, with the assistance of experienced staff and independent experts. The collection includes photographs taken by Hermann Hoyer, a Wehrmacht lieutenant, between 1943-1944, as well as documents from the period. The collection had caused reactions when it appeared at auction on eBay.de, with the Ministry of Culture moving quickly to protect it. A few days ago, the collection had already been declared a monument due to its historical value. Lina Mendoni described the photographs as “extremely important documents of modern Greek history,” emphasizing that they give “a face” to the victims shortly before their execution. The acquisition of the collection by the Ministry of Culture ensures the preservation and accessibility of this important historical material.
