Eleni Glykatzi-Ahrweiler, who passed away at the age of 99, left an indelible mark on the science of Byzantine Studies. According to Professor of Byzantine Studies Stavroula Konstantinou, her work radically reshaped the way we perceive Byzantium. The late academic stood out for her scientific pioneering, her international presence, and her charismatic character, being one of the leading figures in international Byzantine studies, with recognition from international centers and committees of Byzantine Studies. Her research work is characterized by strict documentation, critical use of sources, and synthetic thinking, opening new avenues in the study of Byzantine political ideology and administration. Glykatzi-Ahrweiler managed to highlight the Byzantine contribution to the formation of European identity, offering a new perspective on the history and culture of Europe. In addition to her academic work, Eleni Glykatzi-Ahrweiler was distinguished for her international presence, receiving honorary doctorates from many universities in Europe and abroad. Her career culminated in her assumption of the position of president at the University of the Sorbonne, becoming the first woman to hold this office, a historic event for European universities. Finally, Stavroula Konstantinou emphasized Glykatzi-Ahrweiler's linguistic and communication skills, who spoke and wrote in many languages, broadening the reach of her work. Her ability to convey complex scientific concepts in a clear and attractive way, as well as her teaching contribution, shaped entire generations of Byzantine scholars.
