Kadis: Decisive Period for the EU's Maritime Policy

Cyprus, as the Presidency of the European Council, is promoting the European Ocean Pact and specific actions for the EU's maritime policy. European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Kostas Kadis, emphasizes the importance of the period and Cyprus' active participation in the implementation of the Pact. The European Ocean Pact is the EU's first integrated approach to the management and protection of marine ecosystems, and specific actions will be developed in the near future. Cyprus, as an island state, actively supports the initiative and is leveraging the momentum created. The Cypriot Presidency is working closely with the European Commission to coordinate actions included in the Pact, with a focus on two Strategies: for Island and Coastal Areas. The aim is to record the specific characteristics and challenges of these areas (climate change, connectivity, energy interconnection, waste management) and to find strategic solutions. These Strategies will be presented within the first half of 2026 and will include analyses and proposals to address the challenges faced by island and coastal areas.
