China to Implement Zero Tariffs on Imports from 53 African Countries from 2026

China will implement zero tariffs on imports from the 53 African countries with which it maintains diplomatic relations, starting May 1, 2026. This decision is part of Beijing's broader strategy to strengthen economic ties with Africa and is expected to further boost trade relations and enhance economic growth in participating African countries. China is also committed to promoting negotiations for the signing of joint economic partnership agreements and expanding access for African exports to the Chinese market through improved mechanisms, such as the so-called “green channel” for agricultural products. This move signals a significant effort to deepen economic cooperation between China and Africa. China has already been Africa's largest trading partner for 15 years, with bilateral trade exceeding 2 trillion yuan in 2024. The imposition of zero tariffs is expected to further increase the volume of transactions and create new opportunities for businesses on both continents. This move strengthens China's role as a key economic partner for Africa, providing African countries access to a huge and growing market. It is a significant step towards building a stronger and mutually beneficial economic relationship between China and Africa.
