China Launches 'Large-Scale' Military Drills Around Taiwan

Published December 29, 2025, 09:28

China has initiated military drills surrounding Taiwan, utilizing live ammunition, in response to the sale of US weapons to Taipei. The exercises involve the deployment of destroyers, frigates, fighters, bombers, and drones, focusing on combat readiness, port blockades, and deterrence. Taiwan has countered by deploying its own forces and conducting a rapid reaction exercise. This move escalates tensions in the region, as Beijing considers Taiwan an integral part of its territory and does not rule out the use of force for reunification. The US arms sale, totaling $1.1 billion, has angered China, which has imposed sanctions on 20 American defense companies. Furthermore, increasing military rhetoric from Japan, with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi suggesting potential military intervention in the event of an attack on Taiwan, has worsened relations with Beijing. China strongly criticized this statement. The drills, named 'Justice Mission 2025', focus on air and sea patrols, ensuring superiority, and blocking critical areas. China has warned ships and aircraft to avoid designated areas where live-fire exercises will take place.
