Cyprus' biobank.cy Receives Funding for Research into Rare Kidney Diseases

The Centre of Excellence biobank.cy at the University of Cyprus has announced the launch of the European research project ALP-RARE, aimed at accelerating the development of new therapies for Alport Spectrum kidney diseases. The project, funded by the European Rare Diseases Research Alliance (ERDERA) and the Cyprus Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF), will focus on optimizing and preclinically investigating promising therapeutic interventions. Alport Spectrum kidney diseases are rare inherited conditions that lead to progressive kidney damage and, in many cases, kidney failure. The ALP-RARE project aims to accelerate the transition to clinical trials with patient participation, leveraging the knowledge and positive findings of previous research efforts. Alport Spectrum Disorders are caused by genetic variations that affect type IV collagen, a key structural component of the kidneys. These alterations disrupt the function of the kidney filter, leading to progressive kidney damage. The ALP-RARE project focuses on developing new therapeutic agents to address this serious disease. The funding for the ALP-RARE project strengthens Cyprus' position in European research on rare diseases and highlights the country's role in translational biomedical research.
