Kallas at EP: Greenland's Future Will Be Decided by Its Citizens

The EU High Representative for Foreign Policy, Kajsa Kallas, defended the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark at the European Parliament, responding to reports of potential coercion attempts by the United States. She emphasized that sovereignty is not negotiable and that the EU stands with Denmark and Greenland. Kallas described the statements of President Trump as unprecedented and stressed the need for a united and calm response from the EU. Furthermore, she highlighted the importance of EU cooperation with Greenland, particularly in areas such as skills, education, and sustainable development, mentioning the proposal to double financial funding to Greenland. Kallas warned of the growing geopolitical competition in the Arctic, with China and Russia increasing their presence, and emphasized that NATO can ensure Greenland's security. Referring to climate change, she pointed out the rapid changes in the Arctic and the new economic opportunities and risks that arise. Finally, she stressed that the EU's response must be realistic, pragmatic, and based on international law, reiterating that no country has the right to possess the territory of another.
