Ioannidis: Deportation for Violators - Language Learning and Integration with Rules

The Deputy Minister of Migration and International Protection, Nikolaos Ioannidis, presented the government's policy on migration and the integration of foreigners. Emphasis was placed on managing the overconcentration of migrants in specific areas and ensuring public order. The government is promoting the first National Integration Strategy, aiming for the smooth integration of foreigners who have the right to reside in society. The strategy focuses on learning the Greek language, developing skills, and familiarizing with the Cypriot way of life and political system. However, integration also requires the willingness of the foreigners themselves. In cases of non-compliance or criminal behavior, the measure of deportation will be activated. A significant new tool is the possibility of removing international or subsidiary protection status from foreigners who commit offenses. The relevant bill was recently passed, allowing authorities to take such action in accordance with EU and international law. The process of selecting convicted foreign nationals for repatriation is carried out in cooperation with the Ministry of Justice and the Police, excluding serious crimes such as murders, drug offenses, and rapes. The National Integration Strategy will be submitted to the Council of Ministers for approval before the end of the month, with the participation of international organizations and local authorities.
