Italy: Relic of St. Francis of Assisi Put on Public Display for the First Time

The relic of St. Francis of Assisi has been put on public display for the first time in the Italian city of Umbria, an event expected to attract hundreds of thousands of pilgrims. The sacred remains are exhibited in the Basilica of St. Francis within a special nitrogen-filled case, while the condition of the bones, as described, testifies to the Saint's dedication to his work. The exhibition, lasting until March 22nd, aims to provide a meaningful experience for both believers and non-believers. St. Francis, the founder of the Franciscan Order, is one of the most beloved figures in the Catholic Church. His remains were moved to the basilica in 1230 but remained hidden for centuries to protect them from attacks. They were rediscovered in 1818 and had only been publicly displayed once before, in 1978, for a limited audience. The current exhibition is accompanied by strict security measures, including a transparent case within a bulletproof protection and 24-hour surveillance with cameras. The event's popularity is immense, with reservations for the pilgrimage already reaching 400,000, with visitors from around the world. The display of St. Francis's relic is part of the events commemorating the 800th anniversary of his death, resulting in October 4th being re-established as a public holiday in Italy. This move underscores the importance of St. Francis to Italian culture and religion.
