Strong EU Political and Technical Support for GSI Construction

The European Commission continues to provide strong political and technical support for the Greece-Cyprus-Israel electrical interconnection project (Great Sea Interconnector) and to accelerate its construction. This was emphasized by Commissioner for Energy Dan Jørgensen, responding to a question from MEP Yannis Maniatis. Mr. Jørgensen stated that the Commission is aware of the delays in the project and is working closely with the Greek and Cypriot authorities, as well as the implementing body, to address them. The Commission is also committed to giving particular emphasis to the European Union dimension of the project in third countries, in order to avoid further delays, taking into account geopolitical risks. The project has been included in the EU list of projects of common interest and is funded by the Connecting Europe Facility. The Commission supports the acceleration of the project's implementation and expects the authorities to examine economic parameters to achieve this goal. In his reply, Mr. Jørgensen also referred to the Commission's expectations regarding Turkey, as expressed in the enlargement report.
