Spain Alerts WHO to Possible Human-to-Human Transmission of Swine Flu

Spain has alerted the World Health Organization (WHO) to a possible human-to-human transmission of the A(H1N1)v variant of the swine flu virus. The Catalan Ministry of Health announced that the risk to the population is very low, as the infected individual did not exhibit severe symptoms and there was no transmission to contacts. The case concerns a patient who had no contact with pigs, suggesting human-to-human transmission. This raises concerns due to the risk of recombination of the virus with a human influenza virus, which could lead to a pandemic. A similar case was reported in the Netherlands in 2023. The 2009 swine flu pandemic infected millions of people.
