Iran Gives Deadline to Those 'Involved' in Protests

The head of the Iranian police, Ahmad Reza Radan, has given a three-day deadline to those “involuntarily involved” in the recent unrest in Iran to surrender to the authorities. He promised they would be treated with “greater leniency.” This move comes amid intense protests that began with merchant demonstrations over the high cost of living and have escalated into broader challenges to the government. According to Iranian sources, around 3,000 people have been arrested, while human rights organizations report that the number of arrests exceeds 20,000. The Iranian government accuses the US and Israel of inciting the unrest, while warning that those arrested will be tried quickly and some may face the death penalty.
