Iraq Asks US Not to Use Its Airspace for Attacks

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has asked the United States not to use Iraqi airspace for attacks on neighboring countries, during a phone call with US Secretary of State Mark Rubio. The conversation comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, with US and Israeli aircraft regularly using Iraqi airspace to attack Iran, as well as missiles launched from Tehran. Al-Sudani emphasized the need for guarantees that Iraqi territory, airspace, and territorial waters will not be used for military operations against other countries. He also expressed rejection of any attempt to involve Iraq in ongoing conflicts and any violation of its airspace. Iran has significant influence in Iraq, supporting armed groups that have increased their political and economic role. Iraq is trying to maintain a balance between its alliance with Tehran and its cooperation with Washington. Rubio condemned the terrorist attacks by Iran and its allies in Iraq, particularly in Iraqi Kurdistan, and called on Iraq to protect US personnel and diplomatic facilities. Iraqi air defenses recently intercepted rockets targeting the US embassy in Baghdad.
