India Seizes 3 Tankers Linked to Iran - Under US Sanctions

India has seized three tankers linked to Iran and subject to US sanctions, stepping up monitoring of its maritime zone to combat illegal trade. India seeks to prevent its territorial waters from being used for ship-to-ship oil transfers, making it difficult to track the origin of cargoes. The seizures coincide with improved US-India relations and Washington's recent announcement of reducing tariffs on Indian products, responding to New Delhi's agreement to limit imports of Russian oil. The vessels Stellar Ruby, Asphalt Star, and Al Jafzia had frequently changed names to evade authorities, with owners based abroad. Indian authorities intercepted the ships on February 6th at 100 nautical miles from Mumbai, after suspecting foul play within India’s exclusive economic zone. The post announcing the seizures was later deleted. The Indian Coast Guard has put approximately 55 vessels and 10-12 aircraft on a 24-hour alert. The US Office of Foreign Assets Control had imposed sanctions on the vessels Global Peace, Chil 1, and Glory Star 1, which appear to be linked to those seized. Two of the three vessels are directly linked to Iran, having carried heating oil and sailed under the Iranian flag. The sale of sanctioned oil is often discounted and involves complex ownership structures and mid-sea transfers, making law enforcement difficult. India appears to be taking more decisive measures to enforce sanctions and protect its territorial waters.
