Two Cases of Nipah Virus Detected in West Bengal, India

Two cases of the Nipah virus have been detected in the state of West Bengal in India. Indian authorities assure that the risk of spread has been contained promptly through enhanced surveillance, diagnostic testing, and field investigations. The Nipah virus is transmitted from animals or contaminated food and has a high mortality rate (40-75%). All 196 close contacts of the two patients have tested negative. The first outbreak was recorded in 1998 in Malaysia, while in India it first appeared in 2001, with a significant outbreak in 2018 in Kerala causing 17 deaths.
