"Golden Passports" Case: Former Officials Acquitted by Criminal Court

The Permanent Criminal Court of Nicosia acquitted Dimitris Syllouris and Christakis Giovanis in the case of the “golden passports” and Al Jazeera, by majority vote. The case concerned the investigation of citizenships linked to companies associated with Giovanis, however the final charges faced by the two men were not directly related to the Al Jazeera video. The court’s decision was based on the assessment of the evidence and the evaluation of the testimonies. The prosecution had brought charges in connection with the citizenship of two investors. However, the court ruled that the charges against Syllouris and Giovanis had not been adequately proven. Although the initial case included another defendant, lawyer [AP], who eventually withdrew from the case. The Criminal Court's decision, which amounts to 170 pages, is expected to be subject to legal review by the Legal Service to determine whether an appeal will be filed.
