Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) Workers Stage Strike, Threaten Further Action

Workers at the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) staged a two-hour warning strike, declaring their determination to take further action if the problems facing the EAC are not addressed. The workers are protesting the unfavorable treatment of the EAC by the state, which, they claim, hinders the production of cheap electricity and the reduction of electricity costs for consumers. The President of EPOPAH, Kyriakos Tafounas, stated that “the cup has overflowed” and that the Auditor General’s report confirms the exclusion of the EAC from Renewable Energy Sources (RES). The workers accuse former officials of involvement in practices that favor the private sector in RES. The Secretary of SIDHKEK-EAC, Dimitris Konstantinou, stated that the strike is only the beginning and that the workers are willing to continue their mobilization until their demands are met. They are calling for an investigation into allegations of opaque practices in the energy sector. In addition, the workers emphasized the need to upgrade the Dekeleia station and to utilize the EAC in solving the water problem, as well as their opposition to temporary desalination solutions that increase the cost of water.
