Position of the DISY Municipal Group and Deputy Mayors Regarding the Tender for the Restoration and Change of Use of the Town Hall

The DISY Municipal Group and Deputy Mayors Konion and Agia Marinouda issued a statement regarding the tender for the restoration of listed buildings and the change of use of the Town Hall in the historic center of Geroskipou. They clarify that, while they agree with the general decisions regarding purchases and expropriations in the area, they disagree with the way the specific tender was promoted. They point out that there was no prior decision by the Municipal Council to announce the tender, nor a thorough discussion about the content of the study and the future municipal services that will be housed in the building. During the session, the DISY group tried to promote a substantial discussion, but there was insistence on approving the documents as they were. They considered the documents incomplete, with rough terms, lacking a building study and documented cost estimation. They also questioned the change of use of the Town Hall into a cultural center, as there was no separate cost estimate for the related interventions. They argue that the building program and the overall development of the Municipality should be considered holistically, taking into account alternative options, such as the utilization of the former KEN, to enhance the visitor flow in Geroskipou Square. They recall that the discussion about the utilization of the KEN has been delayed since 2024. At the same time, they emphasize that the approval of the budget does not automatically imply the implementation of each project, as a separate decision of the Municipal Council is required. Finally, they point out that the start of studies and the execution of projects of significant cost require budget approval from the Ministry of Finance, public consultation, a complete feasibility study, a building program, impact assessment, and provision for covering the needs of the Municipality for at least 30 years.
