Calm Returns to Mammari Buffer Zone After Yesterday's Incident

Calm prevailed today throughout the day in the buffer zone in Mammari, after yesterday's incident with the challenges of Turkish troops against Greek Cypriot farmers, Nikos Kotziapasii, President of the Community Council, told KYPE. He stated that today the farmers did not go to the area and that the Community Council is in contact with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Police. “We expect the Ministry to tell us where to cultivate. The area where we have been cultivating for the last ten years is being disputed by the Turkish troops. So they should tell us clearly from the Ministry where to go,” he said. Mr. Kotziapasii said that “if the Ministry tells us that we have been cultivating there wrongly for so many years, then we should be compensated.” “We do not want to risk ourselves or anyone else,” he clarified. He also said that today the UN were patrolling the area with vehicles and a helicopter.
