US: “No Decision” on How to Restart Nuclear Tests

The United States has not yet made any decision on how to restart nuclear tests, despite President Donald Trump's order, while assuring that no tests will be conducted in the atmosphere. Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Thomas Dignan stated that the situation is still being assessed and no specific decisions have been made on how a potential testing program could be shaped. Trump had announced last October that the US was preparing to restart nuclear tests, which it had halted since 1992. This decision was justified by the accusation against Russia and China of conducting tests, creating an “unacceptable disadvantage” for the US. Mr. Dignan reiterated the US government's position that the New Start treaty with Russia on arms control was inadequate and that any future agreement should also include China. However, Beijing has rejected the possibility of participating in discussions on nuclear disarmament, citing the fact that the US and Russia have much larger arsenals. Washington seeks to maintain the balance of power and prevent the further development of nuclear weapons by other countries, while also considering its options for strengthening its own nuclear deterrent.
