Ilias Stephanou on Al Jazeera Case: Issues of Witness Reliability Have Been Judged

Legal expert Ilias Stephanou commented on the acquittal of Syllouris-Tziovanis in the 'golden passports' and Al Jazeera video case, emphasizing that the Legal Service must explain how it handled the witnesses. Specifically, he referred to witnesses who did not testify, suspects who received immunity to testify as plaintiffs, and witnesses who changed their initial testimonies. Mr. Stephanou stressed that the Attorney General's appeal concerns only legal issues and not the credibility of the witnesses, which has already been judged. He also emphasized the need for self-criticism from the Legal Service regarding potential wrong handling of the case. He warned about the need for documented statements from lawyers, due to public interest in the case and public expectations for transparency. Finally, he acknowledged the public's feeling of injustice, which is however the result of a series of decisions and not only this specific one.
